Melbourne Park – Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne Park

Melbourne Park

Melbourne, Australia

About the Project

Home to nine elite national sporting teams, six iconic venues, and the world’s biggest grand slam, Melbourne Park sits at the heart of the city’s Sports and Entertainment Precinct.

Spanning across 40 acres, Melbourne Park attracts attendees from all over the world to witness some of the biggest starts across sports, music and entertainment.

Challenge

When the time came for the redevelopment to begin, CS joined up with the teams at NH Architects and MAD Expansion Joint Installation to solve a couple of challenges the project faced.

Over the years, the Park’s arenas and thoroughfares had undergone significant ground movement due to natural settling. These shifts posed a risk not only to the structural and aesthetic integrity of the site but also to the level seating and world-renowned tennis courts showcased during the Australian Open.

Adding to the complexity, Melbourne Park’s unique architecture and need for visual clarity would preclude standard installation – tricky transition points like wall-floor expansion joints requiring extensive product modification on the installed expansion Joint Covers to maintain the desired aesthetic.

Solution

Working closely with CS’s engineering team, the redevelopment introduced a suite of expansion joint covers. These systems were specially selected for their ability to accommodate multidirectional movement while minimising displacement on the X, Y and Z axes. A bespoke calculator developed by CS ensured the stands would stay perfectly level – even as the ground beneath them expanded and contracted.

APF 150 joints were chosen for the Park’s sprawling paved concourse, offering robust protection for its busiest walkways while preserving the minimalist design. For the stadium walls, the CS XLS2G was selected for its seamless integration along with the RFD series and PC 400, each specially customised to deliver seamless expansion joint integration. With their wide movement capabilities, these joints have ensured long-term structural integrity and stability across Melbourne Park for years to come.
